Armed with a
passion for the arts, Ian Friday - Founder of Global Soul Music, is on a creative mission; to bring soulful music from around the world to the masses. The writer, producer and
DJ coined the term "Global Soul" as a genre of music that connects house, soul, afro beat, jazz and world music and extends past traditional labels.
This New Yorker
has been making an impact within the arts since the early 1990’s. It began with
a not for profit arts organization called The Tea Party Inc., which provided a
platform for emerging and established artists including Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli
and Mos Def. Now in its six year, Friday's successful NYC residency, Libation is an offspring of The Tea Party Inc. and has become the home
base for “Global Soul”.
Both creating and
playing the music has given Friday a 360 degree understanding of not only what
moves a crowd from Paris to Johannesburg to Tokyo, but also what moves other
DJ’s in what they’d like to play. As a producer, Friday creates both remixes
and original music and is best known for
his break out hits “Life Starts Today”, “Theorema Del Faya” and “Found Myself”
all on Tea Party Music as well “Carib’s Leap” on West End Records. His hit single “Kissing You”, continues to garner major attention including being regularly played on New York City mainstream radio station
WBLS.
Friday is currently working on an album called “Life Starts Today” which will
be released in the spring of 2013. The album is a
soulful exploration of all of Friday’s musical inspirations. Fela Kuti, Bob
Marley, Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder have all played a part in the energy
and essence of this fully connected musical experience.
Global Soul Music has and will continue to cultivate talent from around the world.
